Head Coach Steve Franz:
Steve will be returning to coach the Marlins again this
summer. He began his
Marlins career as a 13-15
coach in 2007. He became
head coach in 2009, and has
returned for his third year
at the position. Steve's
swimming obsession began at
the age of 4 years old,
swimming for the Pinegate
Swim Team (under Coach
Bob!). His love for the
sport took him to the
Central YMCA, Lake Erie
Silver Dolphins and the
University Swim club. He
currently teaches at
Riverside High School and
also acts as assistant head
coach for the swim team
there.

Coach
Robert Haag: 13-15 Age Group
Bob began coaching at The Lake County Central YMCA as an
assistant (before they were
the Penguins – they used to
be the Piranhas!) He was
head coach at Pinegate for 9
years from the mid 80’s to
the early 90’s and Assistant
Coach at Mentor High School
in 1984. He became Head
coach at Mentor High School
from 1985 – 1993. Bob was an
Assistant Coach (13-15’s)
for the Mentor Marlins in
2004-2005. He is returning
for his third consecutive
year as a 13-15 coach. He
currently teaches at Mentor
High School and also acts as
assistant head coach for the
Cardinal’s swim team.

Coach Oliver Curwen: 11-12 Age Group
Oliver first coached the Marlins as the 11-12 coach in 2006,
and again in 2008. He has coached the
Lake County Central YMCA Penguins since
the 2006-7 season, as well as assisting
the Notre Dame College swim team in
2007. Oliver grew up swimming in
Toronto, Ontario, for Northern Secondary
School, and also swam at Laurentian
University in Sudbury, Ontario under the
guidance of former Canadian Olympic
coach Jeno Tihanyi. Last summer, Oliver
coached the 9-10 age group and will be
returning this year to coach the
11-12’s.

Kira Haag: 9-10 Age Group
Our newest addition to the coaching
staff will be Coach Bob’s daughter Kira.
Kira swam for the Marlins as
an 8 and under, 9-10, and one year in
11-12
before moving to Turkey with her family.
She returned to swim for 2
years as
a 13-15. Kira is a 4 year letter winner
and Academic All-American
as a
diver and swimmer at Mentor High School.
She teaches swimming at Lake
County
Central YMCA and for the City of Mentor
for the past 3 summers. She
will
attend NYU as a freshman this fall. We
are very excited to have another Haag
back on the team!

Coach Carrie Kaczmarek:
8-Under Age Group
Returning for her fourth
year as our 8 & Under Coach,
Carrie brings a lot of
experience to the youngest
and most energetic age
group. She actually
volunteered for a year with
the 8 & Unders and fell in
love with the kids and with
coaching. Carrie started
swimming when she was 8
years old for the Marlins and
the Lake Erie Silver
Dolphins at the age of 10.
She also swam for Riverside
High School and was
co-captain her senior year.
She currently attends Gannon
University. Carrie is
definitely looking forward
to another year with the
Marlins!

Coach Matt Weber: 8-Under Age Group
Matt started his Marlin experience at the age of 7, and swam
until he graduated from the team in 2007. He returned
in the following years as a volunteer coach with the 8 &
Unders. Last year, Matt officially became an 8 & Under
coach and has really helped Carrie to develop this young
core of talent. He was a graduate of Mentor High School
where he was co-captain of the swim team and class
president in 2010. Matt just completed his first year
at Miami (OH), and can be found lifeguarding at both
Civic and Garfield when not coaching.
